A good hiking harness spreads the load, stays put on steep ground and has a handle for lifting your dog over rocks or onto a gondola. Here is what we use on Bernese Oberland trails, from day hikes to multi-day huts.
Questions
Which harness is best for hiking?
Choose a padded Y-shaped harness that leaves the shoulders free and has a lifting handle on the back. Fit matters more than brand, so we fit every harness in the shop.
Does my dog need boots on rocky trails?
On sharp scree, long descents or hot rock, boots prevent cut and worn pads. Keep in mind they might now need them the entire trail - it is common to put them on for particularly hazardous areas, steeper descents, or as a break for the paws here and there. To truly minimize cut risk, they can be work for the duration of the hike as long as your dog tolerates them and there's no overheating risk.
Most dogs need a few short walks to get used to them, and we recommend putting them on outside or right before going outside. The sooner they are distracted after putting them on, the faster they will start to walk naturally and get used to the boots. Treats help immensely too!
How do I hike past cows with my dog?
Keep your dog on a short lead, stay calm and give the herd a wide berth. If cattle come toward you, stay calm and keep your dog close. Always stick to the path, and stay calm - don't run!
